Simplify the Sensory Environment…<\/p>\n
If you receive (or suspect)\u00a0a CVI diagnosis for your child and do not know where to begin, start by\u00a0thinking about\u00a0the sensory\u00a0input\u00a0in your child’s environment. While your child is learning to use\u00a0his vision to access and understand his world, he may not be able to\u00a0tolerate multiple sensory information at the same time.\u00a0When\u00a0trying to achieve “best vision,” remove\u00a0competing auditory, tactile, and olfactory distractors. As your child learns to use his vision, you will work to return those inputs one by one as you\u00a0begin to understand\u00a0exactly\u00a0the kind of environment your child needs to use vision to the best of his ability. When you are not focusing on vision,\u00a0encourage your child to use all<\/em> of his senses and begin to\u00a0teach him about his world,\u00a0developing concepts\u00a0through experiences.<\/p>\n If your child does not seem to be\u00a0using his vision, here are some strategies to illicit\u00a0an initial visual response:<\/p>\n As your\u00a0family begins\u00a0the CVI journey you will be looking for materials that are appropriate and enjoyable to him. This website has ideas for assessment materials and strategies to try at each stage of your child’s path. Remember to have hope! Work with your Team to assess and\u00a0develop playtime, daily living and instructional activities based on where your child is successful visually.\u00a0Under the Teaming tab, this\u00a0website has a template for a daily routine matrix that allows you to\u00a0list activities of your child’s day across the top and current vision adaptations needed down the side, so that you and your vision specialist can\u00a0“fill in”\u00a0the appropriate environmental adaptations that the entire Team needs to be aware of for success.
